Captain and first mate plead guilty in Mauritius oil disaster

When a dry cargo ship ran aground off the coast of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean in 2020, the ensuing oil spill endangered the area’s natural environment and caused an environmental disaster. These were the facts established during the court case, according to several media reports.

The captain and first mate on board the ship, which in 2020 went aground off the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, have pleaded guilty after admitting that they had both been drinking at a birthday party onboard, thus endangering the ship, the crew and the natural environment.
