New UN guidelines to improve conditions for stranded seafarers

Driven by two UN organizations, shipping has passed new guidelines for how to handle the increasing number of cases with abandoned seafarers.

The number of cases where seafarers are left at sea or in ports has increased dramatically in recent years, prompting the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) to join forces with governments and maritime organizations to deal with the issue.
