2018 set to be another tough year for Maersk Line and competitors

With China's provisional approval of Maersk Line's acquisition of Hamburg Süd, the takeover is virtually a done deal. However, consolidation will not solve the industry's biggest problem, says Alphaliner's chief analyst to ShippingWatch about the deal.

While there were undoubtedly many high-fives exchanged at Maersk headquarters when China approved Maersk Line's acquisition of Hamburg Süd Wednesday morning CET, the group should hold off from official celebrations just yet, says Alphaliner chief analyst Tan Hua Joo of the takeover of the major German carrier, which is all but finalized with China's crucial approval.
