Shippers do not want a "Chinese ceiling" on container freight rates

China's attempts to slow down the container lines' rate increases by introducing a ceiling are not met with support from customers, nor are they reflected in the rates, says analyst.

Even though the Chinese authorities have put pressure on the major container lines to lower freight rates, they have not been successful, notes a leading container sector analyst, Singapore-based HJ Tan.

This has at best put a lid on the market, but as is evident when looking at the development, freight rates between Asia and the US have only continued to soar in the time since the Chinese authorities contacted the container lines.
