NGO warns against using fossil methanol: It could be more polluting than low-sulfur fuel

If the many methanol ships ordered by especially liner company Maersk end up sailing on natural gas-based methanol, the fuel will pollute more than if the ships were to use low-sulfur fuel, warns Transport & Environment, though deeming methanol ”a logical choice.”

If Maersk or other shipping companies planning to deploy methanol-powered ships end up sailing on methanol produced using natural gas, then from a well-to-wake perspective, the ships will pollute more than vessels sailing on low-sulfur fuel, according to NGO Transport & Environment.
