Amazon and Maersk will transport 20,000 forty-foot containers, or feu, on ships that use biofuel under a new contract.

This is the fourth time Maersk and the US e-commerce giant have signed a green shipping agreement, according to a statement.

The new agreement is valid for 2023-2024. According to the two companies, the use of biofuel will save around 44,600 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to around 25 million tonnes of coal, compared to sailing with standard bunker fuel.

As part of the agreement, Amazon will also have containers transported on Maersk’s new container ship which runs on methanol. The ship is the first in a series of new methanol vessels ordered by the shipping company.
