Hapag-Lloyd's fleet chief warns of major shortage of green methanol

The production of green methanol cannot even supply the ships that are ready to sail on methanol today, says fleet manager.
”The methanol refueling facilities in the ports are not even enough to sail a container ship from China to Europe,” says Richard von Berlepsch, fleet manager at Hapag-Lloyd. | Photo: Matthias Schrader/AP/Ritzau Scanpix

It’s hard to see how the green transition of shipping can avoid running out of sustainable fuels such as methanol and ammonia long before the political goals for shipping’s transition are reached, warns Richard von Berlepsch, fleet manager of container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd.
