Evergreen is in the midst of renewing its fleet and the container carrier has made another announcement about deals to charter ultra-large container ships (ULCS's) of 14,000 teu. The carrier has thus made deals with both Costamare and Shoei Kisen Kaisha, each of whom will deliver five 14,000 teu ships to Evergreen during 2016 and 2017.
Before New Year, Evergreen announced that the company had made a deal to charter seven 14,000 teu ships without saying from whom. The seven ships are part of the total ten that are set to join the fleet in a few years. According to Evergreen the ships will optimize the carrier's competitiveness, because, among other things, the company's current costs per handled unit are higher due to older chartered tonnage. These ships will be returned to their owners when their contracts expire, to be replaced by the new vessels.
