Analysis: Considerable savings in having fewer container hubs

The container carriers are working to reduce the number of direct links between several ports on the major tradelanes which will be serviced by the three alliances starting April 1. A new analysis concludes that this could be good for the carriers' business, though it could also hurt the ports.

The new service networks from the three major container alliances show that there will be significantly fewer port pairs among several large ports, not least on the top Asia-North Europe tradelane. And according to a new analysis from firm LinerGrid, it could be a sound move by carriers to focus transport on fewer hubs, as there could be a potential for significant savings.
