EU Commission proposes bolstering coast guard with thousands of staff and billions of euros

The EU's coast guard ordinance from 2016 stands to be bolstered with billions of euros over the coming years. The proposed funding is intended for buying new ships and significantly increasing coastal patrols. Danish Shipping welcomes the proposal.

Merchant vessels have rescued hundreds of asylum seekers in the Mediterranean Sea in recent years, but the EU Commission is now making a proposal that could alleviate commercial ships from doing so.
