Stagnating growth halts newbuild orders

Uncertainty in the global economy and the prospect of halted growth has meant that, compared to last year, less than half as many ships were ordered in the first half of the year.

The halt in the global economy has made shipping companies hold back on investing in newbuilds.

In the first months of the year, about 250 new ships were ordered. This is less than half of the roughly 650 vessels ordered during the same period in 2018, according to new figures pulled by Vessels Value on behalf of ShippingWatch.
