The US expressed to the Greek government its "strong position" on the Iranian tanker vessel that Monday set its course for Kalamata, Greece, according to an anonymous official from the US Department of State. The Iranian tanker left the port in Gibraltar on Sunday after having been detained since July 4.
The tanker was seized on suspicion that it was sailing crude oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions. Iran has denied this to be the case and demanded the ship be released.
