Daily rates on multipurpose market doubled in a year

Multipurpose carriers are profiting from the current container chaos and shortage of available shipyard capacity. The daily rates have doubled in 12 months, according to Toepfer's Multipurpose Index.

In just a year, the global economy has helped revitalize multipurpose carriers with doubled rates for time charter, and nothing seems to indicate that the revenue windfall will stop any time soon.

According to Toepfer's Multipurpose Index, the average daily rate for six to 12 months time charter has risen from approximately USD 6,500 in August 2020 to just below USD 12,500 a year later.

Only three out of ten container vessels – or 33.6 percent – managed to deliver goods on time, according to new figures from Sea-Intelligence.
