Finnish carrier Finnlines sees its passenger count return and cargo volumes grow after the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, the shipping company has come out of the year’s first six months stronger than it did last year, according to a financial statement.

In the first half of 2022, revenue grew to EUR 356.9m from EUR 270.8m in the same period last year. The bottom line grew to EUR 56.3m in the year’s first six months against EUR 36.3m in 2021. Cargo volumes exceeded the level of 2021.

In the wake of the Western sanctions against Russia, Finnlines has stopped calling at ports in the country, which has resulted in loss of income. But at the same time, growing freight volumes on other routes have compensated for this loss, while passengers have also returned following the pandemic, the company states.

”Despite uncertain economic and geopolitical times, Finnlines has maintained its position as a reliable and important carrier of goods,” says Chief Executive Tom Pippingsköld in the statement.

During the year’s first six months, Finnlines has transported 393,000 cargo units, up from last year’s figure of 391,000. The number of passengers has increased to 286,000 for the half-year period against 228,000 in 2021.

Finnlines is owned by Italian group Grimaldi and operates a fleet of RoRo and passenger ships sailing mainly in the North Sea.
