Heavy-lift carriers only order newbuilds in case of long contracts

Leading carriers such as Jumbo and AAL account for the large newbuilds in the capital-hungry heavy-lift sector. Ships are so costly that they are increasingly commissioned with basis in long-term contracts on transport of, for instance, components for the wind turbine sector, according to Drewry.

Despite historically high rates in the last couple of years, multipurpose carriers are still so marked by the preceding ten-year crisis that these carriers only invest in new ships if they are able to secure long-term transportation contracts for the vessels.
