Special cargo rates tread water at solid level

After unexpected drops in demand for heavy cargoes from Europe, multipurpose carriers are holding their breath. But day rates still stay well above the average for the last five years, writes Toepfer.

The heydays for the multipurpose (MPP) market, consisting of carriers specializing in transportation of project cargos, came to an abrupt end in the late summer of 2022 with rapidly declining time charter rates. However, the first quarter of 2023 has provided special carriers with grounds for cautious optimism.
