Lack of seafarers creates growth issues in commercial shipping

Covid and Russia’s warfare in Ukraine have led to shortage of sea officers in particular, and the problem will only increase in the coming years, according to one consultancy.

Carriers are hit by record-high shortage of seafarers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine, and there are no signs that the issue is going to diminish in the coming years when the global merchant fleet is set to grow markedly.
