
When shipowners have their ships scrapped on the beaches in Asia, they're doing it for one single reason: profits, says the Brussels-based NGO Shipbreaking Platform in response to a statement by the Secretary General of the Asian shipowners, Yuichi Sonoda, on Tuesday.
In an interview with ShippingWatch, he proclaimed that the shipping industry depends on beaching. Partly because, according to him, there aren't enough scrapping facilities available, and second, because many shipowners simply can't afford having their ships scrapped under decent conditions in China.
