DFDS CEO Niels Smedegaard will likely be elected new chairman of the European Community Shipowners' Association, ECSA, when the organization holds its next General Assembly this October.

Niels Smedegaard is already part of the traditional troika that makes up the ECSA chairmanship, where the current and former chairman alongside the vice chairman represent the organization's public face. The troika meets with relevant EU Commissioners from the current EU Commission that took up office in the fall of last year. According to ShippingWatch's sources, they will soon meet with Danish EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager who is in charge of competition affairs in the EU, a key area for the shipping industry. Likely topics for this meeting will be competition in container shipping and European ports, as well as competitive aspects of the new environmental regulations including the sulfur directive, which have made it necessary for carriers such as DFDS to install scrubber systems on their vessels.
