
It is of "vital importance" that the text produced at the UN's climate summit COP21 in Paris in December includes requirements that shipping as well as aviation increase their ambitions in terms of the climate, according to a letter sent by seven of the EU Parliament's eight political groups to the 28 EU member states' ministers for the environment.
The Parliament stresses that international aviation and shipping already account for eight percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, and that the two sectors' emissions by 2050 are expected to have increased 200 to 300 percent in 2050 for aviation and by 50 to 250 percent for shipping.
