Southeast Asian nations prepare corridor through pirate-infested waters

Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are looking to establish a protected corridor for commercial vessels through the waters off the coast of the southern Philippines plagued by frequent kidnappings and pirate attacks.

Up to 20 Malaysian and Indonesian crew members on tugboats were kidnapped by Aby Sayyaf militants in the waters off the southern coast of the Philippines this year. A number of Indonesian port authorities, including Kalimantan in Borneo, have now stopped issuing permits to vessels sailing coal from Indonesia to the southern Philippines.
