Climate mitigation could see fleet value halve

Shipping's climate mitigation efforts might, according to a new report, have such far-reaching consequences for tanker and dry bulk shipowners that the value of their ships will be halved. "The time to react is now," warns the report. ShippingWatch provides an overview.

Dry bulk and tanker owners face a stark future if shipping is to comply with the target of keeping global temperature increases to a maximum of 1.5 degrees ahead of 2050.

In such a scenario, demand for coal and oil are set to drop so much that vessel values and earnings will bottom out, concludes a new comprehensive report from Maritime Strategies International (MSI).
