UN to make seafarers key workers during the coronavirus crisis

In order to safeguard supply chains and global shipping services, the UN has adopted a resolution that encourages member states to give seafarers the status of key workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UN now encourages its member states to act swiftly and concretely to solve the crisis pertaining to "hundreds of thousands" of seafarers that remain stranded aboard vessels or in ports due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tuesday, the UN adopted a resolution that member states, organizations and other relevant stakeholders should designate seafarers as key employees during the coronavirus pandemic. The resolution is in practice a joint decision to call on the member states to take action.
