European climate chief supports call for action to IMO

European Commission top profile Frans Timmermans joins the shipping industry in urging the International Maritime Organization to pursue fast climate action.

EU Commission Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans spoke on behalf of the union during the recent COP26 summit and now supports a call to the MEPC from players including Maersk.

BRUSSELS –  When the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) left the virtual negotiating table in November, it came face to face with criticism for lack of ambition and missed opportunities from Maersk, industry interest groups and others.

Now, the industry receives clear support from one of the very top people in the European Union's climate efforts, the head of union flagship the European Green Deal, EU Commission Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, he tells ShippingWatch.
