IMO expands council to include additional countries

By expanding its executive body, the Council, the IMO makes room for another 12 member nations in the assembly that runs the organization's day-to-day work. Arabic, Chinese and Russian will become official languages for IMO texts.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has decided to increase the number of members in its executive body, the Council, from 40 to 52.
