EU's carbon quotas may increase cost of modern supertanker trips significantly

A roundtrip from the Gulf of Mexico to Rotterdam may increase from USD 1.6m to more than USD 2m for a supertanker when the EU’s carbon quota system is implemented, according to calculations. Shipowners stress the importance of who will be responsible for the quotas.

It may become considerably more expensive for a VLCC supertanker to sail the roundtrip between the Gulf of Mexico and Rotterdam in the near future.
