European key ports may be strained by CO2 quotas

A new study by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) reveals that key ports on the outskirts of the EU may be negatively affected by even a low price on CO2, because container carriers can benefit from calling at a neighboring port outside the union.

The risk that container carriers will change their route plans in order to avoid buying CO2 quotas appears to be real.

A study by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) shows that carriers can benefit from accessing a port close to the European Union even with low prices on CO2, because the last voyage before calling at an EU port is thus very short. And this is good for the carbon accounts.
