Batteries can replace sustainable fuels for container carriers, say scientists

More than 40% of the global container traffic could be completed by battery-driven vessels, according to new US study.

Batteries have the potential to be an efficient and climate-friendly alternative to sustainable fuels for a considerable portion of the world’s container fleet, according to a new study published by scientific journal Nature Energy.

According to the study carried out by authors associated with the University of California, Berkeley, it would be both economically and environmentally feasible to deploy battery-driven vessels on container routes spanning as much as 5,000km.
