15 years after the UN adopted the so-called Hong Kong Convention, which sets standards for safer and more sustainable ship dismantling, a date has finally been set for its entry into force.

With signatures from Bangladesh and Liberia on Monday, the agreement has the required backing and will enter into force in 24 months – specifically on June 26, 2025, according to a statement from the UN’s maritime organization, IMO.

”This is a momentous day for IMO, and it is indeed a historical development for the international shipping industry, for the marine environment, and especially for workers and local communities in ship recycling countries globally,” says Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the IMO.
