The EU has decided to send warships to the Red Sea to protect civilian shipping, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has announced on X.

”I welcome today’s decision to launch EU Naval Force Operation Aspides.”

”Europe will ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, working alongside our international partners. Beyond crisis response, it’s a step towards a stronger European presence at sea to protect our European interests,” von der Leyen writes.

The decision was made on Monday at a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

A US-led coalition is already patrolling the waters in an initiative called Operation Prosperity Guardian.
