49 workers have died in Alang in five years

Since 2011, 49 people have been killed in work-related accidents at the yards in Alang, where many merchant vessels are scrapped every year. The conditions have improved significantly in recent years however, notes ECSA in a new report about the demolition yards in India.

Around six PM local time on August 5th of last year, the yard worker Bishweshwar Budhan Mahato was on board the M.V: Atlantic when management decided to stop the demolition of the vessel.
