Number of legal disputes in shipping the highest in years

Tensions arising from the situation in the Black Sea have contributed to rising number of cases, according to law firm analysis.
Last year, shipping companies were involved in around 2,000 arbitration cases in London and Singapore, where most such cases are handled - an increase of 12 pct. from 2021. | Photo: Mehmet Caliskan/Reuters/Ritzau Scanpix

Falling profits in parts of the shipping industry and trade disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine are leading to more clashes between shipping companies and their customers, a new analysis by law firm HFW shows according to Financial Times.

Shipping companies were involved in around 2,000 out-of-court arbitrations last year in London and Singapore, where most such cases are handled - a 12 pct. increase compared to 2021 and the highest number since the law firm began compiling figures seven years ago in 2016.
