Port of Singapore conducts first ammonia bunkering

The port describes the event as an important milestone in Singapore’s development of green bunkering capacity.

The Port of Singapore has been the setting for one of the world’s first fuel deliveries of green ammonia.

The green fuel went into the tank of the Singapore-flagged ship Fortescue Green Pioneer, which was loaded with liquid ammonia from an ammonia plant at the Vopak Banyan Terminal on Jurong Island in the Port of Singapore.

This was announced by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, MPA, in a press release.

MPA says the event marks an important milestone in the city-state’s development of multi-fuel bunker capacity.

The fuel trial is a collaboration between MPA, research institutes and industry partners. The ammonia will be combined with diesel in the combustion process in the ship’s duelfuel engine.

The Fortescue Green Pioneer was converted from a four-stroke engine to run on ammonia in 2022.

In December 2023, the ship sailed from Singapore to Dubai and was showcased at the UN COP28.
