Wärtsilä: ECA development has been surprising

9 days left until sulfur regulations: Scrubber sales ahead of January 1st and the implementation of the new sulfur regulations should have been booming. But sales have only increased slowly, Jaakko Eskola, Senior Vice President of Ship Power at Wärtsilä, tells ShippingWatch.

January 1st is just around the corner, which means that the new regulations for ships' sulfur emissions will come into force, and Finnish supplier Wärtsilä expected that this date would bring a big boost in sales of scrubber systems for cleaning ships' emissions.

"We expected, like everyone else, that there would be a rush ahead of January 1st next year. We have been geared to install scrubbers for a long time and we had a somewhat solid order intake, which is now developing nicely, but things haven't gone as we expected," Jaakko Eskola tells ShippingWatch.
