International regulatory decisions could send the market for ballast water treatment systems soaring in the near future. British researchers point to investments for more than USD 45 billion over the next five years.

Suppliers of ballast water treatment systems are currently holding their breath while various international bodies are gearing up for decisions that could kickstart the market.

The UN's International Maritime Organization, IMO, is working to secure final ratification of its ballast water convention, while the US Coast Guard (USGC) has yet to issue a full type approval approval for a system at this time.
