Spot prices for containerized freight from Shanghai increased this week.

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), which measures spot rates for containerized freight from Shanghai to a number of destinations around the world, rose 5.1 percent to 979.11 on Friday, according to the report.

The index peaked in the first week of 2022 at 5,109.60 as covid-related congestion had multiplied rates.

The index began to decline, especially in the second half of last year, with rates plummeting after a long period of sky-high prices following the corona pandemic.

Spot rates describe freight prices, which — unlike long-term contracts — change continuously, and the index shows the price of a 40-foot container.
