Rolls-Royce and MOL in new partnership for autonomous vessels

The Japanese container carrier and the UK-based supplier will collaborate to develop an "intelligent awareness system." This marks a step toward autonomous vessels, says MOL Director.

MOL and Rolls-Royce have formed a joint venture to develop a so-called intelligent awareness system, which is described by both parties as the first step toward autonomous vessels.

The partnership will specifically work to install the system on passenger ferry Sunflower, which sails for one of MOL's subsidiaries on a route between Kobe and Oita of 222 nautical miles.
