Maersk introduces extra bunker bill for its customers

The rising price of oil will now impact Maersk Line's customers. The carrier has introduced an emergency bunker surcharge in order to cover its costs for fuel. Analyst firm Clarksons praises the initiative.

Yesterday, Maersk announced to its container customers that they should expect to pay USD 20 extra per teu on selected routes from June 1 and July 1.

"The increase in bunker price in 2018 has been significantly higher than what had been expected and has now reached a level of 440 USD/ton in Europe, the highest since 2014. The increase is more than 20 percent compared to the beginning of 2018 and this unexpected development means that it is no longer possible for us to recover bunker costs through the standard bunker adjustment factors (BAF)," writes Maersk in an update to its customers.
