Shippers criticize EU's extension of container block exemption

The Global Shippers' Forum does not understand why EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager wants to extend the container shipping companies' consortia block exemption regulation. The shippers will not let the case rest here, the association tells ShippingWatch.


If there is one party that has been opposed to the fact that the EU has allowed competing container shipping companies to work together for years, it is the Global Shippers' Forum, GSF, which says that the shipping companies should be operating under the same conditions as any other industry.

As such, GSF Chairman James Hookham was very disappointed to hear on Wednesday that EU Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager considers extending the consortia block exemption regulation, BER, by four years from April 2020.
