Rolf Habben Jansen describes the third quarter as a bloodbath

It doesn’t help much that container ships are full when freight rates have reached unsustainable levels on several routes, says the CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.
"It simply does not make sense to sail ships at some of the rates we have seen, and then it is better to not sail them,” says Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, which has canceled a number of sailings on loss-making routes. | Photo: Ulrich Perrey/AP/Ritzau Scanpix

Low freight rates have put Hapag-Lloyd under so much pressure that the German container giant has been forced to cut the number of sailings to save costs and reduce losses.
