SeaIntel: Why rates could rise on top of acquisition

The mere emergence of new constellations in the container industry – now that 20 carriers have shrunk to 12 in just two years – could have an impact on rates as soon as the next few months, writes SeaIntel in a new analysis.

The drastic consolidation in the container industry, with Maersk Line's takeover of Hamburg Süd marking the latest in a series of mergers and acquisitions over the past two years, could make an impact on rates as soon as in 2017. And this is despite the fact that there is fundamentally no difference in the overcapacity of container ships in relation to demand.
