Pressure to make Mediterranean an environmental zone

A new report shows that the level of sulfur emissions along the Gibraltar Strait and of the coast of Barcelona is significantly higher than in the cities. Several NGOs are therefore pushing to transform the Mediterranean into a low sulfur zone like the Baltic Sea and North Sea.

Like the Baltic Sea, North Sea and several waters off the coast of North America,  the Mediterranean Sea should also be declared a low sulfur zone, says German nature association Nabu and NGO Ecologists in Action after carrying out an study of the sulfur content along the Gibraltar Strait and the Mediterranean off the coast of Barcelona.
