The number of pirate attacks more than doubled in the Gulf of Guinea in 2018, where attacks became more violent in the second half of 2018. The problem in the area was a significant factor in the global growth in pirate attacks.

More ships were attacked by pirates in 2018.

201, that is the number of times ships were subject to pirate attacks or armed robbery in 2018, up from 180 incidents in 2017, show figures from the International Chamber of Commerce's International Maritime Bureau (IMB).
