Danish flag beats Norway following Hamburg Süd boost

Denmark's merchant fleet has become the second-largest in Europe. Going forward, factors like new technology and innovation may be decisive factors for carriers when picking their flags. In that respect, Singapore is a source of inspiration and a competitor at the same time.

Denmark's merchant fleet grew nearly 25 percent measured in gross tonnage and became Europe's second-largest, beating Norway in 2018. The historical growth was mostly attributed to the 19 former Hamburg Süd vessels Maersk flagged in.
