
This September dry bulk carrier Nordic Orion became the first large commercial vessel to sail north of the North American continent, and it looks like this will not be the last time the Danish carrier transports 73,500 tons coal from Finland to Vancouver on the Canadian West Coast.
Sustainable Shipping reports that Nordic Bulk Carriers is in negotiations with the Canadian authorities for permission to increase the number of sailings on the Northwest Passage, where the company says that it can save USD 200,000 compared to sailing the longer route via the Panama Canal when the final destination is the American Northwest coast.
