EU proposal on Philippine seafarers on the horizon

The Danish Shipowners' Association expects the EU Commission to present a proposal before the summer holidays regarding actions in light of the conditions on the Philippine seafarers schools.

The EU Commission is expected to present its long-awaited proposal concerning actions related to the Philippine seafarers schools before the summer holidays this year. Withdrawing the schools' license would have far-reaching consequences for the European carriers, as they employ as many as 100,000 Philippine seafarers on their ships.

"We expect that the EU Commission will make an announcement before July concerning what it plans to do, and we hope that it won't underestimate the consequences for European shipping if the Philippine seafarers schools lose their license," says Simon Bergulf, Head of the Danish Shipowners' Association in Brussels.
