A few more ships could get ballast water going

Belgium has - as the 48th country - ratified the convention on ballast water. Now only a minimal 0.18 percent of tonnage is needed to get the convention going.

Belgium is the latest country to ratify the convention on ballast water, states the UN International Maritime Organization, IMO. A convention which currently seems to be just on the verge of enough momentum for implementation. Belgium is the 48th country to ratify the convention, which requires that 30 countries have approved the convention while 35 percent of the global fleet must be covered.
