Proposal to ban HFO in the Arctic has landed – Russia secures loophole

A proposal to ban prohibit vessels from sailing on HFO from 2024 has finally landed. The proposal includes one exemption for the Arctic nations, however, and this causes several NGOs to voice criticism. Incredibly problematic, they say. Updated.

A proposal to ban HFO in the Arctic is now ready.

After one week's work in London, working group PPR, a sub-committee under the IMO, is now ready to present a proposal for a HFO ban in the Arctic from 2024, something a number of environmental organizations has long worked hard for. The ban entails that vessels are neither allowed to sail on or carry heavy bunker fuel in their tanks.
