The US is planning a tender for an offshore wind facility off the Californian coast, with 151,000 hectares set for auction in December.

That is enough space for installing wind turbines with capacity of more than 4.5GW, says the US Interior Department on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg News.

The deep water in the region will require floating wind turbines, which are a more expensive solution, and so far, unseen in the US.

US President Joe Biden hopes to launch 30GW of offshore wind energy ahead of 2030 via tenders near almost all coastal lines where water levels are low enough to install conventional wind turbines on the ocean bed.

“We are taking another step toward unlocking the immense offshore wind energy potential off our nation’s west coast,” says Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

Following the tender’s announcement, wind stocks have increased, with TPI Composites, for instance, a manufacturer of wind turbine blades, surging by 5.2 percent to USD 9.74.
