EU to protect seafarers and hold carriers accountable for pollution

The EU wants to tighten the rules for illegal pollution and ensure that shipping companies will have to foot the bill in the future. 
EU regulations will now target more pollutants that can be discharged into the water, such as sewage, waste and plastic waste, after container drops at sea.

It will become easier to penalize shipping companies when their ships have emitted illegal pollution. Previously, senior officers such as captains and chief engineers have been personally liable for a ship’s pollution, where they could risk fines of up to USD 15,000.
